“It’s not complicated or noisy, indeed we find it quiet, convenient and reliable.”
Stan Green is the Managing Director of Growforth, a plant nursery in Dunfermline which provides plants to homes, gardens, and garden centres throughout Scotland and the North of England.
When the opportunity arose to install a heat pump in one of the greenhouses at Growforth nursery, Stan leapt at the chance. The business had been looking to embrace energy saving technology and increase their limited electricity supply. “When looking to extend our growing capability the heat pump was a no-brainer”, said Stan.
The heat pump at Growforth Nursery was installed in June 2024, providing heat via 140m2 of underfloor heating in the greenhouse. “The installation was very straightforward,” explained Stan. “The technology is new for us growers, so we are feeling our way as to how to get the best from the heat generated, but so far so good.”
The investment has already shown promising results, with the heat pump delivering heat at a lower cost per unit than mains gas while reducing CO2 emissions by 70%. “We know how much of a financial saving and carbon saving we are making with our heat pump,” Stan noted.
Almost half a year after the install, we asked Stan what he had learnt about heat pumps and what he wished other people knew. He emphasised its user-friendly nature, “it’s not complicated or noisy, indeed we find it quiet, convenient and reliable.”
